No visit to Chester is complete without a visit to the family-friendly Dewa Roman Experience museum.
Your visit begins with a journey in the dark hold of a Roman Galley. facing dangers as you travel near the edge of the known world.
Once you reach dry land the reconstructed buildings will immerse you in the sights, sounds and smells of Roman Britain and the fortress that was once home to the 5000 strong "brave and victorious" Twentieth Legion.
Brimming with artefacts from both Chester and the wider Roman Empire, you will also be able to view the genuine Roman, Saxon and Medieval remains buried beneath Chester.
It's not all about looking and smelling, you will also have the opportunity for a very popular hands-on experience! In the award-winning 'hands-on room' you can do a variety of historically themed activities such as trying on Roman Armour, firing a catapult, building a hypocaust and creating a mosaic. For the budding archaeologist, there is a chance to handle and sort ancient pottery and bones on display.
Whether as part of your visit to the Dewa Roman Experience or as a 'stand alone' tour the one hour long Roman Soldier Patrol is the perfect way to explore beautiful and fascinating Chester.
Opening times vary during December, January and Bank Holidays plus there may be restricted access to the public during pre-booked educational visits.
