Chester Arts Hub to Show Fantasy Film for Families

Storyhouse, Chester’s celebrated arts centre will present a live action version of a famous fantasy animation this autumn.

The venue’s cinema is screening Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” in October, with two shows designed especially for children and their parents or guardians.

The 2025 film blends live actors with digital dragons to retell the much-loved story that started out as a children’s novel by best-selling author Cressida Cowell, before becoming a hit animated film series starting in 2010. A story about the strength of friendship, the most recent incarnation takes audiences to the remote Isle of Berk, a place where Vikings war with dragons. When the Viking chief’s son helps and befriends an injured Night Fury dragon called Toothless, everything starts to change, and the two enemies unite to fight a greater foe.

Gerard Butler is the Viking, “Chief Stoick The Vast” and Mason Thames plays his son “Hiccup”. Joining them are a cast of colourful characters including Nick Frost as “Gobber”, Berk’s blacksmith, and Nico Parker as feisty female warrior “Astrid”.

How to Train Your Dragon will now be on screen on Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 at Storyhouse Cinema. The arts centre is situated on Hunter Street in Chester, and the film is around 125 minutes long. Family screening tickets are available priced at £4 for non-members and £3.60 for members, and are suitable for children aged 15 or under. Only adults accompanying a child can attend.
