King Charles' Tower (or the Phoenix Tower), originally a medieval watch-tower was built in the 13th century and stands on the North East corner of the city walls. After falling in to disrepair, it was rebuilt by two Guilds in 1613 and their emblem, the Phoenix, was placed above the door and hence the alternative name. The connection with King Charles is from 1645 when it is believed he stood in the tower and watched as his army was defeated in the battle of Rowton Moor. Over the years the tower was commercially used before being turned into a museum.
