Chester’s Townhall, Eastgate Clock and Newgate will be lit in the Ukraine national flag colours of Blue and Yellow this weekend.

Yesterday (24 February) Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council issued a statement regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Councillor Gittins said:

“I am deeply saddened by the actions of Russia overnight and my thoughts are with the citizens of Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with those in our community with links to Ukraine and other sovereign nations in the region and offer our unreserved support during this disturbing time. I’m urging everyone in our borough to be kind and look out for each other – those affected may be your neighbours, friends or work colleagues. Residents who need advice and support can contact the Council by emailing [email protected] or the Cheshire, Halton and Warrington Race and Equality Centre (CHAWREC) at [email protected] or 01244 400730.”

This is a change to the original plans for the city to celebrate retaining Purple Flag status and lighting the buildings purple this weekend, which will be rescheduled for another appropriate date.
