Christmas Lights Switch On's

See Chester and the surrounding areas shining bright this Christmas

2020 COVID UPDATE - The official lights switch on events aren't happening but Chester's festive lights will still shine!

  • On Saturday 14 November the Town Hall Square Christmas tree will be erected above the Taste Cheshire Farmers market and prompt the light up of the entire city. Chester’s Christmas lights will adorn the streets throughout the season bringing much needed festive cheer to our city!
  • Saturday 21 November will see the suburb of Hoole lighting up in a creative way celebrating its 21st year with a difference bringing the whole community together safely by encouraging residents to decorate their windows and gardens with Christmas Lights
  • From 28 November – 3 January Chester Cathedral will also be lit up by annual Christmas Tree Festival with twinkling trees surrounding the iconic building decorated by local schools and businesses in aid of local charities.
  • The CHEstar has returned to the shine upon the grounds of Chester Cathedral – The giant sparkling Christmas star was handcrafted especially for the city and standing 25ft high and wide with almost 19,000 twinkling lights it is quite a site to behold!

We highly recommend you do some local Christmas shopping and check out all the festive menus available in the city while you’re out and about enjoying the lights and you can also find everything for the season at a glance on our Christmas in Chester page plus all the latest updates as they happen on our Guide to Christmas 2020 blog

Experiencing the Christmas light switch on’s in and around Chester

Chester’s Christmas lights always bring something truly magical to the city and the light switch on’s in the city centre, Cheshire Oaks Outlet and Hoole are normally key events kicking off the Christmas festivities!

Attending one or all of the light switch on’s and immersing yourself in the Christmas spirit is a great way to be a part bringing the light and life to the city and although in 2020 there’s no official event around the light switch on’s it doesn’t mean that the lights turning on can’t still be an event that signals the start of the Christmas season!

Of course while you enjoy the Christmas atmosphere provided by the glorious lights you should also make the most of Chester’s food and drink scene to make a real day of it with special Christmas lunch and dinner menus available and maybe take advantage of a cheeky special offer to make your hard earned money go that bit further this Christmas.

Chester’s has the best restaurants to choose from with lots of child and family friendly options and a great lineup of bars and pubs for a festive tipple or perhaps a cocktail or two!
