Chester Children to Meet Wonderland Characters

As part of its 2025 Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre programme, Chester’s Storyhouse recently launched a theatrical experience for children. Designed for primary schoolers, an outdoor performance of Alice in Wonderland is now playing in the park over summer.

Theatre with a difference, the special show has a walkabout format that lets little ones watch the enchanting story unfold with colourful characters created by Lewis Carroll. After travelling around the park, the play arrives at the main theatre space for the final scene.

Along the way children will encounter firm favourites like Alice (Hannah Blakeley), Mad Hatter (Thom Hallows), White Rabbit (Alexander McGonagle), Queen of Hearts (Hannah Rose Curtis) and the irrepressible Cheshire Cat (Nathan Kenardo).

Suzie Henderson, creative director for Storyhouse, commented that Alice in Wonderland had delighted children since it was released 160 years ago and added:

“Carroll was born not many miles from here, at Daresbury near Runcorn, which makes our walkabout theatre experience for family visitors even more apt. And Grosvenor Park is the perfect backdrop.”

On several special dates in August, young theatregoers are also invited to join a “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”. These immersive events include a selection of tasty treats and an opportunity to meet characters from the walkabout theatre show up close.

The Alice in Wonderland walkabout theatre production will be in Grosvenor Park until August 30, and tickets are available now for just £12. The price of admission to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties is £18 members of Storyhouse.
