Storyhouse Cinema in Chester will soon be showing exclusive screenings of the latest voyage of a kid’s cartoon character.

Titled “The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for Squarepants”, the film will be shown for three consecutive days at the city arts hub offering families plenty of opportunities to catch it.

The fourth big-screen outing for the much-loved sea sponge, the new animated adventure sees SpongeBob try to prove how brave he is to his boss, Mr Krabs. To test his mettle, the aquatic fry cook embarks on a voyage to the underworld joined by mysterious pirate ghost, The Flying Dutchman.

The spectral buccaneer is voiced by Mark Hamill, famous for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars Saga, while Tom Kenny (Transformers, The Powerpuff Girls) and Clancy Brown (Highlander, Starship Troopers) reprise their roles as SpongeBob and Mr Krabs.

SpongeBob SquarePants was created by animator, artist and marine science educator Stephen Hillenburg, who successfully pitched his cartoon to Nickelodeon. Many of the original stories were sourced from a comic book Hillenburg was working on in the 80s with the aim of teaching his pupils about undersea life. Originally a 2D animation, it premiered in 1999 and has enjoyed critical acclaim and widespread appreciation from the public ever since.

The film has a running time of around 97 minutes, and standard children’s tickets are available for £6.75 and adults £9.90.

The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for Squarepants will be shown at Storyhouse Cinema from Friday, February 20 to Sunday, February 22. The arts hub is on Hunter Street in the heart of Chester.
