Visitors and residents of Chester looking for spooky ways to celebrate around Halloween won’t need to look far. City landmark Chester Castle is offering intrepid guests a chance to take a one-hour walk in the historic fortress that has a history stretching back 900 years.

Titled the “Chester Castle Ghost Tour”, the upcoming expedition is available on multiple dates and is suited to those aged 12 and over. Organisers warn those taking the tour to prepare for scares, as the guide will tell stories about some of the darkest moments in the castle’s history.

Spaces are limited on the upcoming tours, so booking is crucial for those interested in participating. As locations on the tour like the Agricola Tower Chapel and the Sally Port are only accessible via stairs, the experience is unsuitable for people who have limited mobility. For personal comfort, the tour operator recommends that all taking part arrive wearing sensible footwear.

Originally built as a motte-and-bailey made of wood by William the Conqueror, Chester Castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. Today, it serves as a permanent military garrison and a county administration centre.

Chester Castle can be found on Grosvenor Street, and its entrance is accessible via T Chester Crown Court Car Park, where customer parking is available. The Castle Ghost Tour will run on October 27,28, 29 and 30, as well as on November 1 and 2; tickets are available priced from £6.13 per person. Tours start at 4 pm on each date, and those booking should turn up 15 minutes beforehand.
