Based in the beating heart of the city, Chester Cathedral is a spiritual centre that has earned a reputation for holding uplifting events and performances. This spring, the much-loved landmark is celebrating two of Europe’s most revered composers at a special evening called “Vivaldi Four Seasons and Grieg Piano Concerto by Candlelight”.

Within the cathedral’s elegant grade-listed interior, classical music enthusiasts can witness a breathtaking live performance from the Piccadilly Sinfonietta, accompanied by Warren Mailley-Smith, the renowned pianist.

The evening commences with “Piano Concerto in A minor” from Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Celebrated as a musical masterpiece, the concerto is designed to conjure the spirit of Grieg’s homeland and its dramatic landscapes.

After a brief interval, the concert continues with perhaps one of the world’s most famous classical works, “The Four Seasons” by Italy’s Antonio Vivaldi. Depicting the cycle of nature, the virtuosic composition was written in Italy and later published in the Netherlands. The performance on the night will feature violin soloist Andrew Harvey.

Founded in 2017, the extraordinary Piccadilly Sinfonietta has thrilled audiences with hundreds of annual performances that offer vibrant and fresh interpretations of classical compositions in some of the most beautiful building and spaces in Britain. It regularly collaborates with top-tier musicians to create immersive experiences for its audiences.

The candlelit concerto will now take place at Chester Cathedral on Saturday, March 14. The cathedral can easily be found sited on Saint Werburgh Street, and the event begins at 7.30pm and runs until 9.30pm.
