Iconic Indie Band Brings Commemorative Tour to Chester

Acclaimed UK alternative act The Wedding Present will appear in Chester in the autumn.

The beloved band is arriving in the city in September to play The Live Rooms, just one stop on an anniversary tour that celebrates four decades in the industry.

Led by singer-songwriter David Gedge, the group’s music is characterised by themes of heartbreak, love, and rejection, where optimism and bitterness collide. BBC Radio 1 Legend John Peel once commented:

“The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!”

Founded in the city of Leeds in 1985, The Wedding Present’s name was a nod to an Australian post-punk band they admired, “The Birthday Party,” which was fronted by music icon Nick Cave.

Closely connected to the C86 scene driven by NME in 1986, which promoted British independents on cassette, the band later rivalled Elvis for the most top 40 hits in a year by releasing a single for each month of 1992.

The upcoming performance in Chester will include a special acoustic set and may feature guest appearances from past members, friends and collaborators. Those attending the show can expect to hear tracks sourced from albums like “Seamonsters”, “George Best”, and many others.

The Wedding Present’s 40th Anniversary Tour will come to The Live Rooms on Tuesday, September 23. The popular events venue is located at 1 Station Road in Chester, and the gig will get underway from 7 pm onwards.
