Storyhouse, Chester’s home of the arts in the heart of the city, is participating in an annual celebration dedicated to the world-famous film star, Marilyn Monroe.
This year the world is commemorating the icon’s 100th birthday and some of her biggest films are coming back for audiences to enjoy on the big screen.
As part of the birthday festivities, Storyhouse Cinema will show the classic 1959 crime comedy romance, “Some Like it Hot”. Directed by the famous Billy Wilder, the Hollywood film features Monroe joined by much-loved actors Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.
The film takes place in Chicago in 1929 during the prohibition era. Curtis and Lemmon play struggling jazz musicians Joe and Jerry, who accidentally witness a ruthless gangster hit. Desperate to evade the mob, they disguise their appearance as women and join an all-female touring swing band. They make their escape to Florida, causing chaos while mixing mistaken identities with romance.
Monroe is revered for her role as Sugar “Kane” Kowalczyk, the band’s ukulele-playing singer. While the character could have easily become a stereotype, critics said her performance blended perfect comedic timing with genuine pathos.
Some Like It Hot will now be on screen at Storyhouse on Saturday, June 13 and the show starts at 3.15 pm. The cinema is easy to find on Hunter Street in Chester and adult tickets are available priced at £8.90 for members and £9.90 for non-members.
The film has a running time of approximately 120 minutes long and has a PG rating.
