Where can I watch the Chester Marathon?

Each year in October the Chester Marathon takes place in the city, and 2025 is no exception.

A much-loved event, the marathon is an award-winning race that welcomes entrants from all over the world. On three separate occasions, the Racecheck Gold-rated event has been declared the “UK’s Best Marathon (with up to 5,000 runners”).

While thousands of people annually enter the autumn marathon far more come just to watch the excitement. In 2022, a total of 20,000 spectators cheered runners along the course. Watch the Start

Most marathon fans don’t want to miss the start. The MBNA Chester Marathon’s runners are under starters orders at Chester Racecourse, the city’s landmark racecourse that has earned international fame as the world’s oldest operating racing venue (according to Guinness Records). The race begins at 9 am and the racecourse is at New Crane Street.

City Spectating

After the racecourse start the marathon’s route takes it through Chester’s city centre. Spectators will find many fine pubs, restaurants and bars on Northgate Street and Eastgate street to grab a drink and a bite while watching the racers pass. The course also passes Chester’s iconic landmarks like Chester Cathedral, Chester Town Hall, the Roman Amphitheatre, the historic Rows, the Eastgate Clock and the Roman Walls.

Rural Views

Those observing the race can also watch the action from picturesque Cheshire and Wales. The marathon runners leave the city and after passing through Pulford cross into Wales. Spectators can see the race in the villages of Lavister, Rossett and Holt and in Farndon with its ancient Roman bridge as the country lanes take entrants back to England.

Watch the Finish

Close to American grill restaurant, Hickory’s Smokehouse, the marathon ends at Castle Drive after crossing the Old Dee Bridge. Spectators witnessing the finish can celebrate at the well-reviewed eatery or head back into town to one of the city’s other popular options.
