The Storyhouse Cinema in Chester is presenting two special showings of “The Polar Express” in the run up to Christmas. Set on Christmas Eve aboard an enchanted train, the 2004 animated film from Robert Zemeckis was cutting-edge for its time, but is now considered a classic.

The cinema is presenting the film as part of its family programme, which is designed for children up to age 15, and adults are only entitled to attend screenings when accompanying a child.

Actor Tom Hanks optioned the rights for the picture book of The Polar Express in 1999, having enjoyed reading it to his children. It was his hope to play both the roles of Santa Claus and the Conductor. Chris Van Allsburg, the author of the book, had been reluctant to sell his rights so the title could be transformed into a motion picture, but Hanks’ interest convinced him otherwise. Not only was the actor successful in securing the roles he desired, but he also voiced many other characters in the film including a ghostly hobo and a puppet of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Today, the film is loved by many who appreciate its values of friendship, leadership and belief and its rousing soundtrack featuring songs like “Hot Chocolate”, “When Christmas Comes to Town” and the titular “Polar Express”.

The Polar Express will be screened at Storyhouse Cinema on Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21. The cinema is situated inside the Storyhouse arts centre on Hunter Street in Chester.

Tickets are available priced between £3.60 and £4.
