Chester to Celebrate Welsh Singer

As part of its celebrated programme of candle lit concerts, Chester Cathedral will be welcoming a show dedicated to a beloved singer from Wales. Dubbed “An Evening with Dame Shirley Bassey” the summer event will see the award-winning Julia Martin on stage delivering a powerhouse vocal performance to emulate the Welsh icon’s unparalleled presence.

The immersive concert was called “simply phenomenal” by Sky Television who praised Martin for perfectly recreating Dame Bassey’s power ballads, stage presence, mannerisms and singing style. The unique concert experience in candlelight has been designed to transport audiences to world of captivating songs and potent emotions within the grand surrounding of Chester Cathedral’s grade listed vaulted ceiling and gothic architecture.

Far more than a mere concert, the event is a celebration of Dame Bassey and the lasting impression she has left on millions of devoted fans throughout the world.

Renowned as the foremost Shirley Bassey tribute act in the world, Martin has the distinction of performing concerts wearing original gowns worn by the celebrated Welsh vocalist during her seven-decade-long career. This includes the Gypsy gown, world-famous creation from designer Douglas Darnell.

Those attending the Chester concert can hear a wide range of Bassey tracks from James Bond themes like “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever” to classic anthems like “This Is My Life”, “Big Spender” and “I Who Have Nothing”.

An Evening with Dame Shirley Bassey will now take place at Chester Cathedral on Saturday, June 1. The performance will start at 7.30 pm and the cathedral is located on St Werburgh Street.
