Acclaimed English rockers Sad Café are coming to Chester this month.
Alexander’s Live will present the band for a single-night show, and music fans are invited to come down for an evening filled with nostalgia.
Perhaps best known for their big hit “Every Day Hurts” that took them to number three in the UK chart in 1979, the band was founded by Paul Young, who later left to join Mike and The Mechanics. It formed in the late 1970s in Manchester, when two different rock groups called Gyro and Mandalaband combined their talents. The new name was taken from “Ballad of the Sad Café”, a novella written by author Carson McCullers.
Over the years, Sad Café has experienced many changes in personnel. Today, the roster features drummer Steve Gibson, keyboardist Matt Steele, saxophonist and WX7 player Neil Shaw-Hulme, bassist Des Tong, guitarist Dave Day and new lead vocalist Paul McCafferty, who signed up just this year.
Popular in the late 70s and early 80s, the band has many other top 40 singles here in the UK like “I’m in Love Again”, “My Oh My” and “Strange Little Girl”. Over in the US, Sad Café also enjoyed success with two hits entering the Billboard Hot 100 called “La-Di-Da” and “Run Home Girl”.
Sad Café will now be on stage at Alexander’s Live on Thursday, February 20. The show will get started at 8 pm, and the entertainment venue is based at 2 Rufus Court in Chester.
