Why visit Chester Zoo in wintertime?

When imagining a trip to Chester Zoo, mental pictures of sunny days and families holding ice creams often spring to mind, but a winter visit can have its advantages.

There’s no doubt the zoo is quieter in the colder season, but this is a core benefit and offers multiple rewards for those willing to wrap up and brave the elements.

Each year, the award-winning zoo welcomes close to two million visitors. As a result, even its 51 acres, which make it one of the biggest zoos in the UK, can feel crowded on a busy day. Winter means you have more space to move around the zoo, but also a shorter wait to enter, take part in activities and order food and drinks whether you stop at a stall, eat at a café or catered restaurant.

When the zoo isn’t as busy, staff have more time to stop and chat. From a relaxed and friendly welcome on arrival to informed talks from expert keepers who care for the animals, a quieter zoo makes the experience more social and personal.

Obviously, the main reason for visiting the zoo is always the animals. Many animals shy away from crowds in busy periods and are easier to see at the zoo on a chilly day. If you want to photograph them to share with friends and family, it’s also much easier to get a clear view.

Chester Zoo can be found minutes beyond the walls in Upton-by-Chester, and is open between 10 am and 4 pm seven days a week.
