Anderton Boat Lift

The mighty Anderton Boat Lift is one of only two working boat lifts in the country and classed as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’  nicknamed the 'Cathedral of the Canals' - seeing is believing!

If you're looking for a day out for the family that has something to keep everyone entertained then Anderton Boat Lift, a giant three-storey-high iron edifice on the banks of the River Weaver, is it.  Winner of experience of the year 2019, the Anderton Boat Lift still does the job it was designed to do, that of lifting boats and barges the 50 feet from the River Weaver Navigation to the Trent & Mersey Canal with the most ingenious and endearing character of any structure on the canal system, which is a sight to behold.

The structure is currently closed, however, you can still enjoy River Trips and award-winning Walking the Lift Tours.

The coffee shop is a welcome stop for refreshments and perfect for picnics and takeaway pizza and the viewing gallery has one of the most superb views around. For that special keepsake of your visit, you'll find plenty of mementoes of your trip to Anderton Boat Lift in the gift shop.

The Visitor Centre and grounds are free to enter, but there is a small charge for parking.

River only Boat Cruise

60 minute River cruises along the picturesque Weaver Navigation. The trip includes a brilliant commentary on the history of the River and Anderton Lift, and a rarely seen up close and personal view of this incredible scheduled ancient monument.

Walking the Lift Tour

Not for the faint hearted this behind the scenes tour begins in the visitor centre before you're guided out along the aqueduct, taken into the previously unseen control room and machine deck and finally out up on top of the lift! This tour is not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights. Suitable footwear and clothing must be worn as this is a walking tour with steps. Minimum age 16+.
