This year, Chester Racecourse is launching a special exhibition at the Chester Grosvenor Museum. The Exhibition entitled ‘Going the Distance: 480 Years of Racing at the Roodee’ runs from 20 April to 6 October.
As the racecourse celebrates another milestone in its illustrious history, this exhibition presents objects and images from the Chester Race Company and the Grosvenor Museum to explore the origins and heritage of the oldest racecourse still in operation in Great Britain, if not the world.
The good news is you can get involved! The museum is looking for people to donate objects or photographs that relate to the racecourse which can help to build up a permanent archive at the museum.
Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member Communities and Wellbeing said:
“The museum is inviting people to donate objects or photographs relating to the racecourse to build up a permanent archive in the museum. Some of the donated items will go on display for the duration of this exhibition. If people are very attached to the objects they will be returned after the exhibition whilst photographs can be scanned.”
Do you have race badges, racecards or something relating to a day at Chester Races from the past 480 years? Would you be willing to get in touch? The museum would love to hear from you before the end of March.
If you would like to offer any racecourse related items to the museum please contact Elizabeth Montgomery (Collections and Interpretation): [email protected] or telephone: 01244 972197.
