Fans of outdoor dining and drinking are spoiled for choice in Chester. Within its Roman walls and beyond, visitors will find a variety of picturesque picnic spots to select from. Here, we look at some of the most favoured and where to find them.

Grosvenor Park

An ornamental greenspace from the Victorian era, Grosvenor Park offers 20 verdant acres for picnic pitches. Overlooking the Dee and accessible via Grosvenor Park Road, it is open to the public during daylight hours. In summer, the park runs many picnic-friendly activities from open air Shakespeare to pop-up pizza shops and cocktail bars. The award-winning park also boasts an impressive nature-inspired play area for kids.

Edgar’s Field

A public park, Edgar’s Field is based in one of Handbridge’s southern suburbs by the Old Dee Bridge. Steeped in history, it is named after Alfred the Great’s great-grandson and features an ancient Roman shrine dedicated to the goddess Minerva. With stunning views of the river and plenty of shade, it’s an idyllic place for picnicking.

Countess of Chester Park

A tranquil place for a picnic, Countess of Chester Country Park is almost 50 acres in size. Featuring wildflower meadows, well-established walking trails and flat grass-covered fields, it presents a picturesque setting for alfresco eating. Benches and picnic tables are dotted across the grounds, and picnickers can put down a blanket and pop a cork while enjoying their hamper. The park is on Valley Drive, beside the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Chester Roman Amphitheatre

Tucking into a picnic at the Chester Roman Amphitheatre is a superb way to unwind with ancient history. Offering free entry, the open-air site features flat lawns that are ideal for a picnic spread. Those wishing to pick up drinks and nibbles will find the city centre with shops, supermarkets and restaurants a short stroll away. The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, the venue is located on Little John Street.

Roman Gardens

Near to the Amphitheatre on Eastgate Row South, Chester Roman Gardens also make an excellent picnic spot. A small park complex, the gardens have benches and lawns for socialising and Roman artefacts to encounter.
