World Bicycle Day was created by the United Nations (UN) in tribute to the popular two-wheeled transport. Each year in June, it celebrates that bicycles are a simple, clean, affordable and environmentally friendly way of getting from A to B, and often sees cyclists undertaking national and local rides to mark the occasion.
Chester makes for an outstanding place to honour the international celebration. The city, its surrounding area and countryside offer an eclectic selection of quiet country lanes, traffic-free greenways and scenic canal towpaths. Whether you want to experience a ride beyond the city or a scenic circuit within its walls, the location has options for cyclists of all abilities.
The River Dee Round is a 24-kilometre loop offering tranquil riverside views. Almost entirely traffic-free, it winds from the west side of Chester to Hawarden Bridge and then comes back around on the opposite banks of the Dee. Summer cycling lets riders watch wildlife and people enjoying water sports on the river, with Hickory’s Smokehouse close by for after-ride refreshments and dining.
Another loop, The Chester Zoo Circular, is popular for a day out. The outward journey follows the Shropshire Union Canal towpath and returns through Newton using safe national cycle routes. With a 13-kilometre distance, the accessible route links Chester City Centre to Chester Zoo in Upton-by-Chester.
Finally, perfect for beginners and families, the Millennium Greenway is a one-way route under 12 kilometres in length. Extending from Chester to Connah’s Quay in Wales, the smooth flat ride follows a former railway line and is completely free from traffic, making it relaxing and extra safe.
World Bicycle Day will now take place on Wednesday, June 3.
