Whether you are a visitor looking to maintain your fitness regime or a Chester resident looking for a new place to work out, rest assured: the city has a wide range of gyms to choose from.

This mini-guide covers the full spectrum, from 24-hour budget chains to specialised studios. We’ve tried to pack as much useful information as possible into around 650 words. For more details, visit the website of the gym you are interested in.

PureGym

PureGym has branches across the country. Its Chester location is a 24-hour gym at Deva Retail Park on Stendall Road. It has more than 220 pieces of equipment, including free weights up to 50 kg, a four-bay lifting rig and a functional training area.

If you work out very early or very late, PureGym gives you complete flexibility.

JD Gyms

JD Gyms opened its Chester site in the former Argos store at Greyhound Retail Park on Sealand Road. The gym is spread over two floors. The ground floor houses free weights, plate-loaded machines and five lifting platforms, while the cardio area is upstairs.
There is no joining fee.

FACTR

FACTR is a small personal training gym based at the Moxy Hotel. It focuses on group personal training led by a small team of coaches. Services include group sessions, specialist boot camps, sports therapy and nutritional support. Membership is structured around coached sessions.

Rage Fitness

Based in Blacon, Rage Fitness describes itself as a community gym and wellbeing centre. It runs more than 50 classes a week, covering HIIT, yoga, boxercise, Hyrox, boot camps and Zumba. You can also receive personal training and nutritional guidance.

Fortitude Gym

Fortitude Gym is an independent gym on Knutsford Way, on the Sealand Industrial Estate. It offers strength and conditioning coaching, short group classes and one-to-one personal training.

Members can enjoy 24-hour access.

Meritor Gym

Meritor Gym operates a branch in Saltney, on the edge of Chester. It is part of Meritor Fitness Club, where you can expect modern equipment from premium brands and personal training options.

DoubleTree by Hilton

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa Chester on Warrington Road, Hoole, sits within 12 acres of grounds just outside the city centre. If you want the full fitness and leisure experience, rather than just a place to use a treadmill or weights bench, this might be the best option.

Alongside its gym and swimming pool, it has a spa with 14 treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, Turkish hammam and outdoor hydrotherapy pool. If you are not a paying guest, it is recommended that you contact the hotel before using the facilities.

Warrior Training

Warrior Training, on River Lane in Saltney, is known for its Hyrox and circuit classes. In 2025, it opened the Hybrid Hub, a 15,000 sq ft performance training space on the same site.

The Hub offers small-group coaching in Hyrox, strength and conditioning, and Olympic lifting. Classes run throughout the week, with daily open-gym slots for independent training.

Total Fitness

Total Fitness on Liverpool Road is one of the few gyms in Chester with a swimming pool. In fact, it has three: a 25 m lane pool, a heated family pool and a hydrotherapy pool. There is also a large gym floor, and group classes include spinning, BodyPump and Pilates.

Brio Northgate

Brio Northgate is a leisure centre on Victoria Road that has reopened following a major refurbishment. Its facilities include a swimming pool, training pool and water slide, as well as a gym, spin studio, squash courts, sports hall and dance studio.

Take a trial

The best way to make an informed decision about a gym in Chester is to take a trial session. Most gyms offer them, giving you the chance to try the equipment, get a feel for the atmosphere and discuss your membership options. If you are only in town for a few days, consider buying a day or week pass.
