A new production of the 90s play “Beautiful Thing” is coming soon to Chester’s city centre.
The much-loved tale about love and life on a tough London council estate has proved a major success over the years and was adapted for the screen by Channel Four Films. More recently it has been regarded as a forerunner to Netflix’s runaway streaming success “Heartstopper”.
Now, Disley Theatrical Productions is bringing the heartfelt love story to the 150-seater Garrick Theatre, located within Chester’s celebrated Storyhouse. September will see Jonathan Harvey’s theatrical masterpiece reenvisaged by Luke Disley (producer) and Phil Edwards (Director), with a cast featuring Jake Cross as Ste, Jack Marsh in the role of Jamie and Abi Hoarty playing Leah, their neighbour. Dan Costello and Catherine Bryant will join them onstage as Tony and Sandra, respectively.
Edwards recently commented on his passion for the project:
“I first saw the film over 30 years ago and fell in love with the story immediately. I later discovered the play version and I’ve seen it at each and every opportunity since – dozens of times in total!”
Drawing inspiration from the 1996 film, the production will also feature the folk music of the late great Mama Cass, whose first love was always the theatre.
A Beautiful Thing will now be on stage at The Garret Theatre from Wednesday, September 11 to Saturday, September 14. Evening performances will start at 7.30 pm and there will be a special matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30 pm.
