While Chester train station can be found to the east of Chester Cathedral and the Phoenix Tower, just beyond the Roman walls, the city has another famous railway line within.
A family-friendly attraction, the Grosvenor Park Miniature Railway has been carrying happy passengers around Chesterā€™s celebrated greenspace since it opened for business in 1996.
The railway was built mark the hundredth anniversary of the Duke of Westminsterā€™s railway located nearby at Eaton Hall and has grown in popularity ever since, with riders young and old and Chester residents and guests alike.
The railway runs in a circuit thatā€™s a quarter mile long and takes in the beauty of Grosvenor Park and the activities of animals and people enjoying its features, from ducks splashing in the pond to children swinging in the playground.
Many passengers marvel at the bravery of the parkā€™s population of grey squirrels who leap across the track along the way.
Running on diesel and steam, the trains are beautifully maintained and run every summer in Grosvenor Park. An ideal excursion for families with junior railway buffs, the Grosvenor Train Stationā€™s ticket office is the perfect place to pick up a keepsake. Inside it has well-stocked gifts shop with train toys including colourful characters like Thomas the Tank Engine.
The railway runs on Wednesdays and Fridays between 11pm and 4pm, and for longer hours over the weekend between 10am and 5pm on Saturday and Sundays. The park is situated in Grosvenor Park Road in Chester.
