An award-winning musical called ‘Hadestown’ is coming to Storyhouse in Chester for a multi-date run this autumn. Celebrated for seamlessly combining ancient Greek mythology with New Orleans-style blues, jazz and folk music, the production has previously achieved success in London’s West End and on Broadway in New York.
Directed by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown is the brainchild of Anais Mitchel, who wrote its book, lyrics and music. The shows in Chester are part of the musical’s first-ever tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland and will allow visitors and residents alike to engage with two intertwined love stories from Greek mythology: that of Persephone and her husband, King Hades, lord of the underworld; and that of the young dreamers Eurydice and Orpheus.
Having earned high praise from The Guardian and five-star reviews from The Times, The Sunday Express and Time Out, the production has been described as emotionally blasting, sublime and a genre-defying musical sensation. To date, it has been streamed by over a billion fans and seen live by more than six million theatregoers. It has won an impressive eight Tony Awards, including ‘Best Musical’, and a Grammy Award in the ‘Best Musical Theatre Album’ category.
Hadestown will be on stage in the Main Theatre at Storyhouse from Tuesday 2 November to Saturday 6 November. The performance lasts around two hours and 30 minutes and includes an interval. Storyhouse member tickets are priced between £42 and £62.70, while non-member admission costs between £46.50 and £69.50.
Storyhouse is situated on Hunter Street in the heart of Chester.
