Where to Celebrate British Sandwich Week in Chester

British Sandwich Week is back this spring to celebrate the humble meal traditionally made with two slices of bread and a choice of filling. While paying tribute to the Earl of Sandwich’s ingenuity, the week led by the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association also respects the snack’s valuable contribution to the UK economy.

Fortunately, Chester offers a plethora of places to sink your teeth into a scrumptious sandwich. Read on for top locations to mark the occasion.

La Brasserie Chester Grosvenor

As part of its casual dining menu, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant serves a selection of upmarket finger sandwiches until 5 pm, accompanied by crisps and salad. Advanced options include steak and a poached egg in a buttered muffin, or smoked salmon with trout roe.

Zugers of Chester

Based on St John Street, this Swiss-inspired coffee shop offers sandwiches served with hand-cut crisps and salad garnish. Options include traditional sandwiches, but also hot baguettes and open Danish-style sandwiches. Fillings include cheddar with chutney, prawn Marie Rose and sausage and onion.

The Chester Fields Country Pub and Restaurant

Beyond the city, but worth the journey, this rural gastropub offers sandwiches for vegetarians and meat eaters alike on its brunch and lunch menu. Diners can choose a bacon, lettuce and tomato (BLT) with mayo, or the same with halloumi cheese (HLT) in a toasted bloomer.

Oddfellows Chester

With its Wonderland Afternoon Tea, this boutique hotel serves white seeded or wholemeal bread finger sandwiches. Its exotic fillings include prosciutto brie and red onion chutney, smoked salmon with cream cheese and coronation chicken. Sandwiches here can be served with a glass of fizz to celebrate.

British Sandwich Week runs from May 18 to May 24.
