A Taste of NYC in CH1

Steakhouses are a New York City tradition so deep-rooted that they can be traced back to the early 19th century. Whether rich, fatty and corn-fed; lean and minerally grass-nourished; salt-crusted; butter-topped; or dry-aged to earthy, juicy perfection, a great steak is always incredibly satisfying.

One thing all the best steakhouses have in common though is an obsessive focus on meat and its quality – something the team behind Chester’s famous Upstairs At The Grill take to a whole new level.

Housed in the former Customs House at the bottom of The Rows on Watergate Street in the heart of Chester’s historic city centre, Upstairs at the Grill broke the mould when it first opened its doors back in 2002, taking its lead from some of New York’s finest steak emporiums. Using only the best dry aged steaks the UK has to offer, each week they work with their own butcher to source the select cuts based on breed, marbling, age and heritage, to offer their guests the finest cuts this side of the Atlantic.

Celebrating its 14th Birthday this year, this ‘upside down’ restaurant fuses the understated style of an English Gentleman’s Club with all the glamour of a Manhattan speakeasy, with cocktails taking centre stage alongside their impressive range of steaks, seafood, and signature dishes such as the twice baked Stilton Soufflé or the famous “Arnold Bennet Omelette”

Diners can curb carnivorous cravings by choosing from a range of classic cuts such as Porter House, Delmonico and Bone in Rib Eye or ring the changes with one of the more unusual steak selections such as Fillet Steak on the bone, Bavette, or the ever increasingly popular Flat Iron.

Small but beautifully appointed, the upstairs bar area is the perfect place to peruse the menu and be guided through the informative steak presentation – a butcher’s board groaning with the finest cuts of meat from both sides of the pond. The knowledgeable team will guide you through the various options from sirloins and ribeyes to the more obscure USDA Rib Eye – a sweet, buttery cut imported from the USA and of course the classic Chateaubriand which comes from the head of the fillet and is widely regarded as the ‘king of steaks’.

Their delectable range of classic sauces such as traditional Béarnaise and indulgent Cropwell Bishop Blue Cheese along with a selection of butter infusions provide the perfect accompaniment and if you are not thinking of moving anytime soon the divine triple cooked beef dripping chips with truffle oil and Gran Morvaria Parmesan are just to die for.

If seafood is more your thing the starters provide more than a supporting role here. The Wild Caught Scallops pan fried with Cheshire cider brined pork belly and Hunters Moon roasted cauliflower are simply divine while the Handpicked Devonshire Crab Salad is packed with stunning flavours and just perfect for those of you looking for a lighter introduction to the main event.

In true ‘speakeasy’ style the drinks range here is also nothing less than mesmerising. Home-infused bourbons, gins and liqueurs jostle for position on the shelves with obscure brews collected by the passionate bar team during their regular forays to some of the globe’s more unusual producers.

Over 80 artisan gins and a cocktail list that reads like a who’s who of mixology completes the offering and the not-to-shabby wine list means you are sure to discover the perfect tipple to accompany your culinary adventure.

So next time you are in Chester – forget the humble steak and chips and think delectable cuts of the best, locally sourced British meat and American specialties served with all the style, knowledge and flair of New York’s finest and take your taste buds on a transatlantic journey of pure indulgence.
