This February, a sociable lunchtime walk is taking place in the heart of Chester.

The guided tour is led by Green Badge Guide and city expert Katie Crowther, and focuses Chester’s celebrated Lower Bridge Street. The walk begins at the main entrance of city arts hub Storyhouse just after midday and will last 50 minutes.

The relaxed stroll will take walkers to Chester’s historic centre to explore Lower Bridge Street and its beautiful buildings. Many of these have intriguing histories, including a church with links to the Vikings and several pubs that date to the medieval era with close connections to the Siege of Chester, a 16-month battle in the First English Civil War.

Around the time of the war, the enclosure of The Rows, especially in Lower Bridge Street, saw the removal of many of the Row structures. While just traces remain in modern Chester, The Rows used to continue into Lower Bridge Street.

The walking event will also explore the important role that Lower Bridge Street played in the 20th century as part of Chester’s heritage movement.

While the upcoming walk does not include a lunch, the guided tour recommends The Kitchen, Storyhouse’s onsite restaurant, as an ideal option to get some sustenance before or after the experience.

The tour of Lower Bridge Street is ideal for city residents and visitors to Chester and will take place on Wednesday, February 19 and starts at Storyhouse at 12.10 pm. The arts centre is based on Hunter Street.
